Getting a Virginia Passport

Most people choose the post office because of the longer operating hours. Also, there are many more post offices than county offices, courthouses, and libraries.

So, take your papers, including the completed form, supporting documents, and fee, when you apply. If you get a minor passport, both parents must be present. Otherwise, complete the appropriate forms or else your child application will get rejected.

Post Office Processing Options

With the acceptance of your application, you will be presented with two processing options. The first is no rush or routine processing. This option takes 7-10 weeks and can take longer under specific circumstances. If you have no intention of traveling and can wait, select this one.

The other option is if you don’t have the time to wait seven weeks. Expedited processing, as it is known as, decrease the time by two weeks. So, you will have a new passport in 3-5 weeks. To get approval, show your proof of travel, flight itinerary usually works, and pay the extra cost.

Upon approval, you will get your new passport in the mail. A few weeks later, you will receive your other documents (birth certificate, Naturalization certificate, and marriage certificate) in the mail as well.
