South Dakota Passport Acceptance Agents

South Dakota has many passport acceptance agents you can apply for a passport. The most convenient way to give your papers is the post office. Other sites include the courthouse, county clerk’s office, and some public libraries. All these locations are certified by the State Department to accept applications.

Each site has specified time to accept an application. So, call the office before showing up. You can apply for an adult or a minor passport. You can also apply if you are doing so for the first time, or replacing a damaged, lost, or stolen passport.

Documents to Submit

To get a passport, you must provide some documents. The ones to give are listed on the form you use to apply. You must provide:

  • The completed form (DS-11, DS-82, or DS-64)
  • Proof of Citizenship Documents:
    • Birth Certificate
    • Certificate of Citizenship
    • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Proof of Identification:
    • Valid Driver’s License
    • A state-issued ID (State ID, Military ID, NEXUS Card)
    • Expired Passport
  • Fee (exact amount):

Which Processing Option to Take?

At any of South Dakota acceptance agents, you will have two options to process the application, routine or expedited. Routine or standard processing is the common choice taken by applicants. It is the lowest cost but takes the longest, 7-10 weeks.

Expedited, however, is if you need your passport sooner than seven weeks. To get this option, you must provide evidence of travel. It could be a copy of your flight itinerary or hotel reservations. Also, pay the extra cost for the service.

Same Day Service

Same day service is not available at the post office of other acceptance facilities in South Dakota. However, if you need a passport to travel sooner than two weeks, apply with your documents at a passport agency or a private expeditor.

Passport Agencies

Regional passport agencies are scattered across the U.S. There are only 26 agencies. So, not every state has one. There is no passport agency in South Dakota. The nearest one is in Minnesota, the Minneapolis Passport Agency.

To get a passport the same day at the Minneapolis Passport Agency, you must first get an appointment. To get one, call the National Passport Center hotline at (877) 487-2778. Only applicants can attend the meeting; so, don’t bring anyone else. With approval, you get a passport the same day.
